For the first time this season, ABC will cover the NHL with Gary Thorne and Bill Clement in the booth, Mike Milbury is at ice level. Over to them now.

Gary Thorne (voiceover): Last year, the Devils brought the Stanley Cup back to the Garden State for the first time in 12 years. 4 months after their Game 6 triumph over St. Louis, Tommy Pickles and the Devils are back and ready to recapture the Holy Grail of Hockey. Their journey begins tonight against Central Canada's heroes - the Winnipeg Jets. Last season, the Jets put on a historic run to their first postseason in 19 years, only to be swept by Otto Rocket and the San Jose Sharks. Last night, they blew out Ben Tennyson and the Bruins on home ice. Tonight, they face unfamiliar foes as they look for revenge against the Devils, who swept the season series between these teams last year. The journey to Lord Stanley's Cup begins now. Devils, Jets.....NEXT ON ABC!

(NHL on ABC 2000-2004 theme and intro)

NHL ON ABC
Presented by Sprint

Gary Thorne: We're in New Jersey for this matchup and so are the Jets, who found it difficult to put up any kind of offense against the Devils last season, getting swept in the season series last year against the reigning Stanley Cup Champions. There you see the Jets arriving at Prudential Center earlier this morning for their warmup. They have a difficult task ahead of them as they face Tommy Pickles and this potent Devils squad in their home and season opener here on ABC. And welcome inside Prudential Center for the 2nd season of the return of the NHL on ABC. Gary Thorne, Bill Clement with you. Mike Milbury is at ice level, we'll check in with him later. Bill, this is the first game for the defending champion Devils this season. They were able to keep their team together. What should we expect from the Devils going forward?

Bill Clement: Gary, they completely revamped their coaching staff. They have a new coach in John Hynes, a new training staff focused on not just injury recovery but injury prevention, they also have one of the deepest benches in the league. I'd be shocked if they didn't make the playoffs again this season.

Gary Thorne: And as for the Jets, they staged a miracle run to the playoffs only to get swept by the San Jose Sharks last season. This year is all about redemption for Winnipeg. They started out strong last night with a 6-2 win over Boston. Tonight, of course, a difficult challenge ahead as they take on New Jersey. We take a look at our officiating crew - Trevor Hanson, Dean Morton are the referees. Linesmen are Trent Knorr and Mark Wheler, off-ice officials are from the Dallas Stars and we are underway in New Jersey!

Pickles has it jabbed off his stick with a poke check, picked up by Kimi Finster and back with it is Tommy Pickles. Pickles will fire! It's blocked in front by Sampson, rebound taken by Phil Deville, SAVE MADE BY KELAMIS! Rebound in front for Finster, AND KELAMIS WILL FLASH THE PADS!

Bill Clement: What a display by Rolf Kelamis on that first shift, denying the Devils of a potential goal!

Gary Thorne: Marie Kanker with a turnover, puck grabbed by Dylan Pickles and he'll start the rush. Arm is up, delayed call on Winnipeg. Pickles with a shot! Rebound, shot! Save by Kelamis and Marie Kanker's reaction, she is heading off to the box! We get the call from Trevor Hanson.

Trevor Hanson: Winnipeg penalty, #33, 4 minutes for cross checking.

Bill Clement: A double-minor! Don't see those too often, Gary.

Gary Thorne: Marie Kanker off to the sin bin, 4 minutes for cross-checking at 1:16 of the opening period. This will bring up an NRG Power Play for the Devils, their first this season. They were operating on a 47% clip on the power play last season. This portion of the NHL on ABC presented by Goodyear - #1 IN TIRES. Pickles back with it now, pass over to Phil Deville. Deville faked his shot, working his way out of the double team, back over to Tommy Pickles for a shot! Save made by Kelamis. Rebound for Kimi Finster, loses the puck off the poke check and it's played along by Dil Pickles! Dil Pickles.....over to Tommy Pickles....SHOT! REBOUND.....SCORES!

(New Jersey Devils goal horn)

Tommy Pickles with his first of the season and the Devils start their title defense up 1-0 in the home opener!

Bill Clement: This is just the Devils taking advantage of the extra man on the power play. You see Kelamis over there thinking 'RATS! I left a rebound!' Tommy sees this chance and takes full advantage of it. Puts it top shelf on Kelamis. Nice play by the captain, makes it 1-0, Devils lead.

Goal: Tommy Pickles (1)
Unassisted
Time: 2:18 - 1st Period

Gary Thorne: Tommy Pickles picking up the unassisted marker at 2:18 of the opening period as we have a turnover in the defensive zone! Tommy Pickles....to Finster.....SCORES!
