FOX Sports 1?

(dramatic music)

Patrick Dempsey (voiceover): It is a race of great length and many moods. It begins in mid-afternoon, then quickly plunges into an unnerving twilight zone of artificial light that lasts almost half the race. Dawn will reveal the battle damage of the night - cars streaked with oil, others showing contact with other cars or the wall, a few missing altogether, and from that first light to the race's end lie the tense last hours. Those who have come so far always knowing that they are just as likely to fail near the finish as near the start and the hard earned equity of laps run guarantees nothing. This is the toughest of all the endurance classics and it is the first major race worldwide of the year. Teams typically use road racing specialists as well as the best from Indy and NASCAR, who used to treat this race as a tune up for their own series, but now consider victory here an end in itself. The cars are divided into classes - stock appearing but highly modified GT cars and the specialized, built for racing only Prototypes - A dangerous mix of fast and faster. The track's defining feature, the banking, looms large in the flat Daytona landscape, walling off the rest of the world and creating one of its own, in this world, the essence of long distance racing. Everyone who races here shares the idea of winning. But to actually become a winner, you must first go the distance. The 24 Hours of Daytona....and it starts NEXT!

ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA

(America's Pregame theme)

Brian Till: FOX Sports welcomes you to the World Center of Racing - Daytona International Speedway - for the 54th running of one of the world's great endurance classics, the ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA! We welcome in our audience from our FOX telecast. Alongside Justin Bell and Tommy Kendall, I'm Brian Till. Welcome to Daytona. We'll take you to 11 PM Eastern time here on FOX Sports 1, then switch to FOX Sports 2 to take you through to 7 AM and rejoin you here on FOX Sports 1 at 7 AM to take you through to the finish and beyond. We first take a look at the stories from the first 2 hours here at Daytona. A record number of entries and drivers here this year at Daytona - 72 cars and over 200 drivers this year and we have a trio of rookies in our polesitting entry, the 70 SpeedSource Mazda. A clean start for most, except for the 70. Alyson Stoner spun her tires on the start, falling from pole position, outside the top 5. They made a driver change during the break. Jeff 'Swampy' Marsh, an avid race fan and racer in his own right, now in the car. He runs 7th. Later in the hour, Star Butterfly would take the lead away from Adrien Agreste in that WeatherTech 37. That Tequila Patron entry runs as the Prototype class leader and the leader overall, looking to repeat as champions of the Rolex 24. Riley Daring and the Porsche 911 factory entry has led every single lap in the GTLM category so far, as has Josh Mankey and his #85 team in PC along with GT Daytona leader Yogi Bear in his Aston Martin factory entry #007. Hour 2 came to a close with a massive 8 car pileup in the bus stop chicane involving Zak Saturday, Marie Kanker, Juandissimo Magnifico and a host of others. Those drivers are out of the race. You see our race recap, we are under our 3rd caution period, we'll spend about 13 hours in darkness, making this the toughest endurance race ever.

(RESTART: Lap 102 - 12 caution laps - 4:41 PM (2:11:00))

Brian Till: A lengthy cleanup from our 3rd full course caution, now back to green flag racing here at Daytona....look at the jump by Marco Diaz! He's picking up right where he left off from a year ago!

Justin Bell: Diaz is a man on a mission. He wants to set this Tequila Patron ESM team up for a three-peat next year. He can do it, he's got the skill, he's got the talent, but he and his team have to win.

Tommy Kendall: I talked with team owner Scott Sharp, told me the one motto he told his team all month....'Failure Is Not An Option'. The team knows that and has it plastered on their race shop. They are ready and raring to go for a 24 hour duel. They want to stick it to Ganassi, just like they did last year.

Brian Till: Another team that wants to stick it to Ganassi is the Wayne Taylor Racing squad. 3 times they've tried to win this race, 3 times they've failed. Best finish of 2nd last two years. They want to win this race as badly as the other 71 teams in this field.

(Lap 156 - Caution 4 - 5:05 PM (2:35:00))

Brian Till: Got a car around in the International Horseshoe, that's Ricky Cervantes in the #29 Prototype. He was 6th in class and overall before getting turned around. Let's see what happened to him.

Tommy Kendall: 70 car got him. Jeff 'Swampy' Marsh got up behind him, gave him a little tap and clipped him in the right rear quarterpanel.....sent him spinning.

(RESTART: Lap 162 - 6 caution laps - 5:20 PM (2:50:00))

Brian Till: Closing in on 3 hours complete here in Daytona, green flag in the air....we CRANK IT UP for you!

(Crank It Up graphic)

(Lap 210 - Caution 5 - 6:08 PM (3:38:00))

Brian Till: And the 51 of Trixie Sting off course! She's into the wall coming out of International Horseshoe.....CAUTION! Full course caution #5 is out at the 3 and a half hour mark here at Daytona. Pits are open and everyone's coming in! Andrew Marriott?

Andrew Marriott: The Ganassi 02 among the first to hit the pit lane, Alex Minazuki set to take the next stint. For now, it will be Reggie Rocket in the car for a possible triple stint. 4 tires and fuel, she's away! Jamie?

Jamie Howe: Out of the GTLM class, Riley Daring coming to pit road. She was your polesitter, she leads in class. 4 tires and fuel for the 911 and she's away! Matt?

Matt Yocum: The Force is strong with Lando Kalrissian in the 6 for Stevenson Motorsport. He leads in the GT Daytona class. 4 tires and fuel for car 6 and he's away!

Top 5 by class:

1. Marco Diaz (1)
2. Reggie Rocket (02)

(RESTART: Lap 216 - 6 caution laps - 6:20 PM (3:50:00))

Brian Till: 10 minutes shy of the 4 hour mark here in this year's Rolex 24 as we go back to green flag racing and Diaz is off and running, JB!

Justin Bell: He certainly is, Brian. I talked with him after final practice yesterday. He's more confident now than he ever was going into last year's race. Remember last year, drivers like Butterfly and Diaz had never seen the track before. It was a total shock when they ended up winning.

Brian Till: And....OOOOOOH! Mabel Pines nearly loses control of that DeltaWing!

Tommy Kendall: That was a tremendous save by Mabel Pines right there! Take a look atop the pit box for the 0 car.....Wendy Corduroy breathing a sigh of relief. Last year, she was involved in a wreck near the halfway point.

Brian Till: This year all about redemption for the DeltaWing as we have a race for the lead in both GTLM and GT Daytona! In GTLM, Riley Daring has the lead in the 911, Jack Atlas trying to run her down in the 912! GT Daytona has Lando Kalrissian in the lead for Stevenson Motorsports, Ashley Armbruster in the Waltrip entry running him down!

(912 Team Communications)

Jack: It is absolutely absurd that a girl is running faster than me.....I'M THE TRUE MASTER OF FASTER!

Yusei: Jack, calm down. We've got 20 hours to go.

(Lap 272 - Caution 6 - 7:14 PM (4:44:00))

Brian Till: Lights are on at Daytona, the first ever motorsports arena with the completion of Daytona Rising, closing in on 5 hours complete as we are under our 6th full course yellow of the race. The cause.....debris in the bus stop. We'll come back to Daytona after this.

(Crank It Up graphic)
